28 October 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, in partnership with York University, conducted the Public Forum on “The Filipino Diaspora in Canada: Successes and Persistent Challenges” in line with the 75th anniversary of Philippines-Canada diplomatic relations. The forum was intended to highlight the migration experiences of distinguished Filipino Canadians, particularly the challenges they faced and their success stories.

The speakers included Minister of Small Business Rechie Valdez (recorded video message); Senator Flordeliz (Gigi) Osler; University of Lakehead Dean Glenda Bonifacio; and York University Professor Patrick Alcedo.

In her opening remarks, York University Senior Policy advisor to the President Lisa Philips emphasized the importance of diversity and partnerships being promoted by the University, including with the Philippines.

In her welcome remarks, Consul General Angelica Escalona emphasized that migrating to another country is a commitment, particularly for a better future for one’s self and family, to integrate into their community and to contribute to society. She urged the attendees, particularly the youth, to follow the example of the speakers and pursue a life of excellence.

Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita Austria, in a recorded video message, noted that the main driving force and anchor to the relationship between the Philippines and Canada is the strong people-to-people linkages. As such, she urged the Filipino community to do more and be inspired by the migration stories of the speakers in contributing positively to society.

Also in a recorded video message, Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman highlighted the growing partnership between the Philippines and Canada and the contribution of the Filipino diaspora to this growth. He noted that it is essential not only to celebrate successes but also to confront the barriers and identify pathways forward for inclusivity and opportunity for all.

During the panel discussion moderated by Prof. Philip Kelly, Associate Dean for Research, Graduate and Global Affairs, York University, the speakers underscored their being Filipino and the values of hard work and resilience instilled in them by their parents as major factors to their success and a drive to make a positive impact to the community. They were one in asserting that the Filipino community serves as a vital support system to new migrants.

While acknowledging that credentials recognition remains a barrier for Filipinos in Canada, the speakers also note that these are being addressed, especially with champions from the diaspora who are able to influence the policy-making process. Regionalism among Filipinos, while serving as a strength on the richness of Philippine culture, was also identified as a barrier. Uniting for a common goal and rising above regionalism is deemed necessary for Filipinos to be able to have a broader role in Canadian society.

The speakers also agreed that more Filipinos need to be at the forefront and take on a leadership role in all fields, especially the young generation. “You must be ready to venture out of your comfort zone if opportunity comes and to not be afraid. Ask yourself, “Why not me?”, Senator Osler emphasized.

A reception followed the forum which served as an opportunity for the attendees to network and continue the discussions on the issues and concerns relevant to the Filipino community.

The forum was held at the Tribute Communities Recital Hall of York University and was attended by around 120 students, members of the Filipino community, university officials and professors.
