PR-2021-07

8 March 2021, Toronto, Ontario – On 6 March 2021, the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto joined the webinar organized by the Friends of Filipino Immigrants in Manitoba (FFIM), Inc., in cooperation with the Booth University College, School for Continuing Studies.

Consul General Orontes V. Castro delivered the Opening Remarks during the online lecture attended by more than 50 participants, including the Consulate’s personnel.

The webinar was titled “Filipinisms and Glocal English” and was conducted by Dr. Lucris Carina Agnir-Paraan who is currently the President of the Northern Christian College in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. The webinar is one of FFIM’s Professional Development seminars for Filipino newcomers in Manitoba.

Accordingly to Dr. Agnir-Paraan, cultural norms influence the way one speaks and writes and that Filipino newcomers tend to bring coined terminology or Filipinisms to their consciousness and make a deliberate effort to use Standard English, especially for business correspondence.

The webinar is FFIM’s event contribution to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP), and one of the Consulate’s Filipino community events for the 2021 QCP and GAD-related event to celebrate the National Women’s Month in March. – END
