The Filipino community in Ontario received a singular honor when the following three Filipina-Canadians were awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, at an investiture ceremony held at the Legislative Building at Queen’s Park in the city of Toronto:
1. Ms. Norma Carpio, President of the Philippine independence Day Council (PIDC), for her leadership in fostering unity and collaboration among Filipinos and other ethnic groups, for promoting Philippine culture and heritage and for organizing cultural festivals and promoting young Filipino talent, thus contributing to the richness of the multi-ethnic Canadian culture;
2. Ms. Amy Ada, for her leadership in advocating causes within the Filipino-Canadian community and for her being a living proof that newcomers to Canadian society need not leave the heritage of their country behind; and
3. Ms. Minda Neri, former president of PIDC, for her volunteer work and significant contributions in promoting cultural understanding through appreciation of Philippine heritage and culture.
The Provincial Government of Ontario distributed around 2,000 Diamond Jubilee Medals to worthy recipients to give recognition to their remarkable accomplishments and important contributions to society. The Honorable Michael Chan, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, presided over the investiture ceremony and lauded the awardees for making a difference, for their inspiration and example, and for their constant efforts to foster a better world.
Consul-General Junever Mahilum-West represented the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto at the investiture ceremony.
